Durham Tees Valley Airport was first used as an airfield during the second world war in 1941 when it was an RAF bomber base known as Middleton-St-George.

Following the war, the RAF continued to use the airfield until the 1960s.The RAF decided to abandon the use of the site and the airfield was then closed.

The local authorities took control of the airfield and the first plans for use as a civil airport were formed in 1964.

Since then, many significant developments have taken place, with the building of a passenger terminal. The new terminal was opened in 1966 and shortly after this the first scheduled flight took place, to Manchester.

Since then, the airport has continued to grow and expand, and now sees over one million passengers pass through each year. As well as developing many scheduled services, Durham Tees Valley Airport has also built up a variety of tour holiday destinations, providing the people of the North East of England with easy access to sunny destinations around Europe.

In 2004, the name of the airport was changed from the former 'Teesside Airport' to the new name of 'Durham Tees Valley Airport'.
