| History of the Airport
Durham Tees Valley airport first came into existence during the second world war in 1941 when it was an RAF bomber base known as Middleton-St-George.
After the war, the RAF continued to use the airfield until the 1960s when they decided to abandon the use of the site and the airfield was closed.
The local authorities then took control of the airfield and plans for civil use were made in 1964.
Since then, continuous significant redevelopments have taken place, with the building of a passenger terminal in 1966. Shortly after it's opening, the first scheduled flight took place, destined for Manchester.
Since this time, the airport has continued to grow and expand, and now sees over a million passengers pass through its gates every year. As well as developing many scheduled services, Durham Tees Valley Airport has also built up a variety of tour holiday destinations, providing the people of the North East with easy access to sunny destinations around Europe.
In 2004, the name of the airport was changed from yje former 'Teesside Airport' to the new name of 'Durham Tees Valley Airport'.
