About Durham Tees Valley Airport

Durham Tees Valley airport first came into existence during the second world war back in 1941 when it was an RAF bomber base known as Middleton-St-George.

Following the war, the RAF continued to use the airfield until the 1960s when the RAF decided to abandon the use of the site and the airfield was closed.

The local authorities then took control of the airfield and plans for civil use were formed in 1964.

Since then continuous significant redevelopments have taken place, with the building of a passenger terminal. The new terminal was opened in 1966 by Queen Margaritha of Sweden and shortly after this the first scheduled flight took place, destined for Manchester.

Since this the airport has continued to grow and expand, and now sees over a million passengers pass through its gates every year. As well as developing a many scheduled services, Durham Tees Valley Airport has also built up a variety of tour holiday destinations, providing the people of the North East with easy access to sunny destinations around Europe.

In 2004, the name of the airport was changed from yje former 'Teesside Airport' to the new name of 'Durham Tees Valley Airport'.
